G8 Student Takes Gold at VEX World Championship

G8 Student Takes Gold at VEX World Championship
Brandon Fisher

Jason W. (Class of ’28), one of our middle schoolers who’s been into robotics since 4th grade, has taken that interest to new heights: He recently clinched the title of world champion at the 2024 VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas! And get this - he was competing at a high school level.

Alongside his teammates, he not only brought home the High School Division Championship but also the World Championship title. Also notable is that it’s the first time in a decade that a High School Division team from China has snagged that global honor.

As both the driver and builder on the team, Jason poured two months of hard work into creating his final robot. This enriching experience didn't just expand his perspective; it also helped him connect with fellow students worldwide who share a passion for robotics. The competitive environment not only sharpened his skills but also led to the formation of many cherished friendships.

And when he’s not busy exploring the intricacies of the robotics world, Jason is actively engaged in his school's science and math classes. Turns out, those math classes equipped him with the analytical skills needed to crack those robot riddles.

“In math, my teacher shows us how to solve certain math problems in a smart and effective way, and I think that also applies to robotics. When I make the robot, usually there are so many problems that I need to solve, and I have to solve them by thinking intelligently.”—Jason W. (G8)

But Jason is not alone in his passion for robotics at Concordia. We have a comprehensive robotics program for students from Pre-Kindergarten all the way up to high school. It’s all about fostering innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking – and it’s the perfect introduction to the ever-changing world of technology.
