Celebrating Growth and a Teamwork Award at the VEX IQ Scrimmage
On Saturday, November 22, twenty Concordia students from Grades 5, 6, and 7 traveled to Hangzhou International School to take part in a VEX IQ scrimmage. Representing our school across six teams, students spent the day competing, learning, and connecting with peers from seven international schools.
We are proud to share that out of 38 teams, one Concordia team earned the Skills Teamwork Champion Award, given to the top-performing alliance based on their combined score in the Teamwork Challenge matches. Additionally, four Concordia teams placed in the Top 8—a wonderful accomplishment and a reflection of their effort and growth.
Beyond the results, students took time to reflect on their performance and identify ways to continue improving their robots. Their motivation and perseverance are already driving them forward as they prepare for their next competition in January.
We celebrate not only their achievements, but also the process—the problem-solving, collaboration, and independence that make their engineering journey such a powerful learning experience.

Athletic Training Room Upgrade
At Concordia, we care about more than the score; we care about the health of our student athletes. This year, we updated our athletic training room, a medical space where our high school athletes go when they are hurt or need help after practice or games. These changes show that safety and care are a priority for our community.
One of the most important additions is the sports whirlpools. A sports whirlpool is a large metal tub, similar to a big bathtub, designed for athletes. It can be filled with cold or warm water. Athletes, especially from running and court sports like soccer, cross country, track and basketball, can sit with their legs in the water after hard activity. Cold water can help reduce soreness, remove waste products from the muscles, and help them feel better and recover faster.
The whirlpools also support injury recovery. For the first 72 hours after an injury, we usually use ice to control swelling. After that, we can use the two tubs as “contrast baths,” moving the injured area between warm and cold water. We carefully control time and temperature based on sports medicine guidelines. This method can reduce swelling and improve blood flow speeding up the recovery process.
We also have new treatment tables. The head and legs can be raised or lowered, which helps us use gravity to reduce swelling. The tables are strong enough to hold up to 270 kilograms and are covered on the tops with a material that blocks liquids and germs. Combined with the medical grade cleaner that kills bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus, this helps prevent infections.
These updates support Concordia’s goal of caring for students’ body, mind, and spirit. A vision that started with our previous Athletic Trainer, Dr. Jennifer Rizzo, and made possible with help from Concordia's leadership and Board, actions and investments like this speak to Concordia's committed to student health and safety.
