HS Drama Students Attend Workshop with Gecko Theatre Artist

This past week, the fifteen high school students enrolled in Drama 1 and Drama 2 continued to deepen their studies of the dramatic arts through a challenging and stimulating workshop led by visiting artist Madeleine Fairminer, a practitioner from the internationally acclaimed Gecko Theater group, known for their cutting-edge approach to physical theater.
Our students sweated, worked together, and created an incredible ensemble piece through the challenging and vigorous three-hour workshop. During the workshop they had the experience of exploring the art of physical theater, focusing on how movement, emotional expression, and breath can enhance dramatic performances. Under Ms. Maddy’s expert guidance and passion, the students participated in hands-on activities that pushed them to explore storytelling in new, creative ways without relying on words alone. After reflecting on the workshop, one student said, "I am so thankful that I was able to have this workshop. I learned that I am stronger and more creative than I thought I was!" Another said, 'That was exhausting, theatre is like a high impact sport!" Another said, "This workshop was inspiring in so many ways to my practice as a theatre artist. I know that I have deeper levels of energy and creativity and more that I can give to the group."

For our students, this was more than just a learning experience—it was an opportunity to grow as young artists. The workshop gave them new tools and techniques to bring into their future performances and sparked even more enthusiasm for the craft they love. It was also a chance for them to collaborate with the middle schoolers who were selected to participate, mentoring and building relationships across divisions as we continue to grow and invest in our drama program.
We are incredibly proud of our students who rose to the challenge of this incredible opportunity with Gecko Theater company. Their hard work and talent were on full display, and they left the workshop inspired and eager to continue developing their skills.
Congratulations to our selected eighth-grade students—you’ve made our middle school proud! 🎭✨
