Elementary School CCAs

A wide variety of Co-Curricular Activities (CCA) are offered in the elementary school for students in Grades 1-4. Concordia teachers lead engaging and educational activities such as Art Journaling, Chinese Stories, Girls Who Code, and YEP. Activities are held from 3:20 PM to 4:20 PM, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sessions run for 6 weeks and are held once in the fall, winter, and spring. Outside vendors also provide additional classes such as Kung Fu, Tennis, or Mad Science for a fee. CCA are optional, but participation is highly encouraged. 





Parents will receive an email about one month before each session begins with information about how to register for activities. Registration will be done on-line.

Monday

Battle of the Books! (G4)    

Prepare for Battle! This commitment spans across the Fall and Winter CCA sessions culminating in a live Shanghai School-on-School “duel” set in March. Engage with friends, in more than just a Book Club where you will read, challenge, discuss, and ultimately prove your knowledge about at least 4 of the following books:

Beauty in Numbers (G3-G4)

Experience the power of numbers! Big Data has become an essential skill for companies and businesses. More importantly, it provides us an opportunity to make information powerful and relevant. This is not an extended math class; Big Data is an exploration of how numbers can transform our thinking and our understanding of the world around us. Working together, students decide what information they want to collect, create a collection system, visually display their information, and then analyze their data through the lens of "What can I learn?” and “How can this help our lives?"

Clay Works (G1-G2)

Do you love to create and work with your hands? Work with air-dry clay and learn basic techniques—rolling, flattening, pinching, kneading, and scoring.  These basic techniques will be used to create various projects. Make your own work of art to keep or give as a special gift.

Flower Arrangement (G1-G2)

Explore gardening and have fun getting your hands dirty! Learn different styles of flower arrangement through teacher demonstration using real flowers. Plan and create your own designs. Enjoy the beauty around us and encourage others as you take home your creations and share with your family.

“How to” Make It (G2-G3)

Have you ever wondered “how to” draw animals, make milkshakes or fold origami? Have you ever wondered “how to” make slime, create the perfect pop-up card, or make the best paper airplane? Utilizing the “how to”books from our amazing library you will invent new things, learn new skills, and equip ourselves to be more creative!

Kung Fu (G1-G4) (Registration costs apply)**

Taught by national champion Master Zhang, this class will focus on practicing traditional Chinese Kung Fu with the purpose of developing strength, agility, and flexibility, and a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture. Students will be stronger, faster, and more alert after taking this course. Presented by Beijing Milun Kung Fu School. **660RMB for the 6-week session.

Mad Science (G1-G2) (Registration costs apply)**

Do you want to be a little archaeologist and explore the formation of fossils? Do you want to be a little nutritionist, exploring the nutrition that our body requires, and learn why eating three meals a day is healthy? Do you want to come along with us to a “crime scene” and help solve a mystery as a junior detective? What important information did your fingerprints leave behind? Through a series of fun and interactive scientific experiments, students learn observational skills to feed their curiosity and develop initiative and creativity. Mad Science delivers unique, hands-on science experiences. No refunds. **1200RMB for the 6-week session.

Want to learn how to make some unique sounds? Use various types of equipment to experiment and make the sounds of frogs, birds, and even falling rain! Would you like to become a vehicle engineer?  Use gears, wheels, axles and more to build a motor vehicle. Learn more about the forces behind airplanes, trains, and cars.  You will be introduced to, and will feel the forces of friction, inertia, and gravity, to better understand Newton's Laws of Motion. Mad Science delivers unique, hands-on science experiences. No refunds. **1200RMB for the 6-week session.

Students can spend focused time after school to finish homework or receive a little extra help in understanding assignments. Concordia teachers and High School student volunteers staff these sessions.  Homework Club is offered three separate times; each day is considered to be one activity, so please sign up for the day you want. You may select one, two, or all three days it is offered.

Soccer-Boys (G4)

Meets Monday and Friday, must commit to both days. 

A fun hour of soccer skill development for Grade 4 BOYS will be on Mondays and Fridays for 11 sessions. This activity will meet from 3:20-4:20 PM on October 12, 15, 19, 22, 26, 29, and November 2, 5, 12, 16, 19. Drills will focus on improving basic fundamentals, footwork, coordination, teamwork, and having fun. Do you have a heart for making a difference in the world? The Youth Empowering Progress (YEP) Service Club might be just for you! 

Through education and human care projects, this group collaborates with middle and high school students to research the needs in China and implement a plan to serve. Come join us in serving!

Tuesday

Active Games with Mr. G! (G3-G4)

Come play games with Mr. G. Bring a positive attitude and enjoy getting sweaty, playing active games, and having fun! Dodge ball, Scooter Soccer, and Double Trouble are some of the games planned. Bring your sport shoes, comfortable clothing, water bottle, energy, and positive fun attitude to play, challenge yourself, and make new friends! 

Calendar Art (G3-G4)

Do you like to draw and color? Enjoy using your creative skills while also making a personalized calendar to help you remember important dates! Have fun thinking of all the special events you celebrate with your families and friends as you use colorful construction paper, craft supplies, stickers, sequins, and more to design your calendar. You may even decide to use your calendar as a gift!

Chess for Beginners (G3-G4)

Q: Do you know why the pawn is an optimist? A: It is always looking forward. Learn the basics of chess such as piece movement, openings, and how to checkmate your opponent. Everyone can improve his or her game through simple lessons and actual chess matches. Best suited for basic, first time learners.

Chinese Storybook Making (G1-G2 Heritage Mandarin Students Only)

Enjoy learning and reading Chinese stories in Mandarin. Students will also create their own Chinese picture books. Each lesson will include a Chinese story read-aloud, Chinese character instruction & practice, peer reading, and artistic crafts. Learn Chinese stories to share with family, friends, and classmates. 

Construction Toys (G1-G2)

Would you like to design a home or a zoo? How tall of a structure can you build? How strong is your building? Use a variety of construction toys to bring your ideas to life. Create buildings, bridges, crazy creatures, cars, cities, and more!

Creative Choreography (G2-G4)

Have you ever been in a show?  Have you ever wanted to learn a dance routine that you have seen on the stage?  Using music, movement, facial expression, and emotion, imagine yourself as a part of a choreography team.  Creative Choreography is your chance to be involved in a group that loves to move together to music. Learn new moves as well as create some of your own. 

Handbells (G3-G4)

Have you seen the Middle School students perform with handbells at our assemblies? Now you can learn how to play handbells! Learn handbell ringing techniques, how to care for handbells, and work together to perform short musical pieces. 

Requirement:Students MUST be able to read music.

Reader’s Theater (G1-G2)

Express your dramatic talents and reading skills! Practice reading several reader’s theatre plays, then choose a favorite play, create character puppets, and perform a puppet show for your parents. This is a great way to practice expressive reading and use your dramatic skills!

Tennis by Multisport (G1-G2) (Registration costs apply)**

Mini tennis sessions are designed for this age group by using softer balls and mini tennis rackets to ensure the children have a great time learning the basics of tennis. Taught by qualified and enthusiastic coaches, children will also work on hand-eye coordination and sending and receiving skills. All within fun-filled games to spark their imagination.

Art Journaling (G3-G4)

Express your inner voice through a variety of two-dimensional art techniques. Creative lettering styles, pen and ink calligraphy, watercolors, and other decorative art materials will spark the creative process. Through the use of inspirational writing prompts, students will express personal insights and feelings as they create original art.

Chinese Reading and Writing (G3-G4 Heritage Mandarin Students only)

Do you want to read Chinese picture books without Pinyin? If so, you can enjoy reading colorful picture books and improve your Chinese reading skills! Read original Chinese stories written by Chinese writers and be challenged with reading comprehension exercises based on books such as:

《我有一盏小灯笼》by甘大勇
《一个,两个,三个……蘑菇下躲雨》by小微

Want to improve your writing skills? You will, when you create your own Chinese story, using only characters! Have fun creating your own stories. Each student will receive an additional activity booklet, that corresponds to a story we studied, to use at home. Enjoy expanding on your learning by doing this booklet with your parents!
 
You may also bring in your work the next week for review. Share your creative story telling knowledge and love of books with others!

Chinese Stories (G1-G2 Heritage Mandarin Students Only)

Students will learn six famous Chinese Stories, such as The Goddess Chang’e Flying to the Moon, Kitty Goes Fishing, and The Tadpoles Look for their Mommy.

We are not only enjoying read aloud stories, but also making fun pictures with foam stickers of these stories. 

The stories In Chinese are: 嫦娥奔月,小猫钓鱼,小蝌蚪找妈妈,等等。

Fun, Fit, & Fabulous (G1-G2)

Grab your exercise clothes and let’s have some fun! Together you will enjoy a range of games and activities, while getting heart rates up and sweating a bit! 

Girls Who Code (G2-G3)

Girls! Are you an “imagineer”? Are you someone who likes to imagine, design, and create? Join Girls Who Code! Learn the basics of coding as we design programs to recreate familiar childhood games. Develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as tap into your unlimited creativity! Combine your talents to engineer and imagine!

Knitting (G3-G4)

Have you always wanted to learn to knit? Now is your chance! Learn every step of the knitting process. Get ready to make a simple scarf.

Calling all girls! Want be in a CCA where everything is awesome? Join us as we build friendships, have fun, and explore different activities with building sets from LEGO® Friends to Star Wars. The fun doesn’t end there! Participate in LEGO® STEM activities that challenge us to use our imagination as we develop engineering skills in a setting just for girls. 

littleBits™(G1-G2)

BloxelsEDU (G3-G4)

Bloxels EDU is an intuitive platform for creating video games in the classroom. Bloxels EDU will encourage collaboration while guiding students through a design thinking process. When students build games, they become the writers, artists, designers, and developers of their own interactive game that can be used to teach and tell stories.

Chinese Board Games 中文桌 游 (G2-G4)

Want to know more about popular Chinese board games and why they are fun? Want to improve your Mandarin through playing board games?  Learn Mandarin and increase your vocabulary through playing fun games like: Mandarin characters of childhood(汉字小时候),24 dots (24点), and Flying chess (飞行棋).Instruction will be lively and interactive. No level of Mandarin required.

Chinese Painting Rock! (G3-G4)  

(NoChinese required) Do you like art? Are you a fan of Chinese art? If you do, this is the right CCA for you.

You will learn to appreciate 5 masterpieces of Ancient Chinese painting (张择端《清明上河图》、顾恺之《洛神赋图》、阎立本《步辇图》、张萱《捣练图》和顾闳中《韩熙载夜宴图》) and do some activities based on your understanding of these painting. You will not only do painting, but also do drama, art crafts, games, stories, etc.

Clay Works (G1-G2)

Put technology aside and come enjoy a variety of board games! Have fun playing games that challenge your problem solving  and collaborating skills. All you need to bring is good sportsmanship and a positive attitude. And remember, it’s not about winning but about having FUN!!!

Ceramics (G3-G4)

Please join Ms. Aguilar for this Ceramic  CCA as a studio time to make self-select items hand building with earth clay. Prices will be glazed and fired at the end of the session term.

Don’t let the pigeon take this CCA! Let’s read different Mo Willems books each week and do activities to go along with them such as puppets, comics, and reader’s theater.

Math Games and Puzzles (G1-2)

Do you love numbers? Have fun with math doing puzzles, tangrams, card games and other games.

Ozobot Storytelling (G2-G3)

Ozobots are mini robots that follow lines, see colors, and can be programmed using color codes. Students will learn how to use Ozobots and have them follow simple commands.   Then they will select a story and design a story map in which the Ozobot is the main character. Combining their understanding of narrative stories and programming they will use lines, colors, and simple actions, so their Ozobot will act out the story.

Reader’s Theater (G1-G2)

Chinese Dance (G2-G4) 10 students

In the CCA of Chinese Dance, your kids will be learning basic movements and routines, as well as some simple choreography in Chinese music. 

Chinese Shadow Puppet Show (G1-G2)

(Heritage Mandarin Students preferred)

Do you know what is Chinese Shadow Play? Did you try to make a Shadow Puppet before? With the teacher’s help, you make your own shadow puppet, edit your script, and do a shadow puppet play with your friends.

We are not only enjoying read aloud stories, but also making fun pictures with foam stickers of these stories. 

The stories In Chinese are: 嫦娥奔月,小猫钓鱼,小蝌蚪找妈妈,等等。

Dance Fun & Fitness for Boys (G1-G4)

Are you a boy who loves to dance around? Do you like learning Fortnite dance moves? What about making up cool dance moves with your friends or just having a dance party? Then this is the CCA for you! Together with Mrs. Alfano and other boys in grades 1-4 we will explore popular dance moves, play movement games, and create a dance routine to perform! 

Doodles & Thoughts (G1-G2)

Get your crayons, markers and notepads! We will use our time to express our thoughts through writing and drawing. You choose what to write and doodle! 

Dramatic Reading (G1-G2)

Express your dramatic talents and reading skills! Practice reading several Aesop’s Fables, then choose a favorite fable, create characters, and perform a show for your classmates. This is a great way to practice expressive reading and use your dramatic skills!

Fun, Fit, & Fabulous (G1-G2)

Grab your exercise clothes and let’s have some fun! Together you will enjoy a range of games and activities, while getting heart rates up and sweating a bit! 

Hand Sewing Introduction (G3-G4)

Hand sewing is great for kids on road trips and long airplane rides, Come and learn some basic stitches and techniques. We will focus on running stitch, backstitch and blanket stitch. Students will bring home their creation each session.

Girls Who Code (G2-G3)

Girls! Are you an “imagineer”? Are you someone who likes to imagine, design, and create? Join Girls Who Code! Learn the basics of coding as we design programs to recreate familiar childhood games. Develop critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as tap into your unlimited creativity! Combine your talents to engineer and imagine!

Kung Fu (G1-G4) (Registration costs apply)**

Taught by national champion Master Zhang, this class will focus on practicing traditional Chinese Kung Fu with the purpose of developing strength, agility, and flexibility, and a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese culture. Students will be stronger, faster, and more alert after taking this course. Presented by Beijing Milun Kung Fu School.

Concordia teachers and High School student volunteers staff these sessions. Basketball - Boys(G4) Meets Monday and Friday, NO BUS service

A fun hour of basketball skill development for Grade 4 BOYS will be on Mondays and Fridays for 11 sessions. This activity will meet from 3:20-4:30PM on April 9, 13, 16, 23, 27, 30, May 4, 7, 11, 14, 18. Drills will focus on improving basic fundamentals of passing, dribbling, and shooting, along with coordination, teamwork, and having fun. Must commit to both days, attending Monday and Friday sessions. No bus service will be available. Parents must provide transportation. Limited to 20 students.

Experience the power of Big Data. Big Data has become an essential skill for companies and businesses, but more importantly provides an opportunity for us to make information powerful and relevant. This is not an extended math class, but rather an exploration of how numbers can transform our thinking and our understanding of the world around us. Working together students decide what information they want to collect, create a collection system, visually display their information, and then analyze their data through the lens of "What can I learn? and How can this help our lives?"

Chinese Board Games 中文桌游 (G2-4)

Want to know more about popular Chinese board games and why they are fun? Want to improve your Mandarin while playing board games? Learn Mandarin and increase your vocabulary through playing fun games like: Mandarin characters of childhood(汉字小时候),24 dots (24点), and Flying chess (飞行棋).Instruction will be lively and interactive. All Mandarin levels are welcome!

Construction Toys (G2-G3)

Would you like to design a home or a zoo? How tall of a structure can you build? How strong is your building? Use a variety of construction toys to bring your ideas to life. Create buildings, bridges, crazy creatures, cars, cities, and more!

Create! Create! Create! (G3-G4)

Create what? Create crafts? No, create toys! Have you seen a toy made of recycled materials? Use your imagination and create a variety of toys such as a car, robot, house, or doll! Create in the great environment of the Maker Lab and turn everyday, recycled materials (boxes, cans, bottles, lids) into a useful toy to play with or share as a unique gift for someone special.

Games of Yesteryear (G1-G2)

Ever played jacks? Explore the world of tech-free games by playing jacks, card games, jump rope, jump rope rhymes, and marbles. Have fun learning games which have been around for years! Impress your parents or grandparents with your retro-game knowledge!

Active Games with the Gribbles! (G3-G4)

Come play with the Double Gribbles! Bring a positive attitude and enjoy getting sweaty, playing active games, and having fun! Come play with Mr. and Mrs. Gribble! Capture the flag, Dodge ball, Steal the Bacon, and weather permitting – bouldering on our awesome rock wall are just a few of the games planned. Bring your sport shoes, comfortable clothing, water bottle, energy, and positive fun attitude to play, challenge yourself, and make new friends!

Broadcasting (G3-G4)

Breaking News! Be the first to work together and produce a monthly news broadcast to be shared with elementary classes. You will learn to interview, videotape, and edit stories. Broadcasting encourages you to enhance public speaking abilities and improve writing skills. Each student will have an opportunity to produce a story, edit video, and be an anchor for at least one broadcast.

Chinese Storybook Making (G3-G4) Heritage Mandarin Students Only

Join this Mandarin-speaking CCA where we learn and read Chinese stories. Students will also create their own Chinese-language picture books. Each lesson will include a Chinese story read-aloud, Chinese character instruction & practice, peer reading, and artistic crafting. Learn Chinese stories to share with family, friends, or classmates!

Lego Girls® (G1-G2)

Calling all girls! Want be in a CCA where everything is awesome? Join us as we build friendships, have fun, and explore different activities with building sets from LEGO® Friends to Star Wars. The fun doesn’t end there! Participate in LEGO® STEM activities that challenge us to use our imagination as we develop engineering skills in a setting just for girls.

Art Journaling (G3-G4)

Express your inner voice through a variety of two-dimensional art techniques. Creative lettering styles, pen and ink calligraphy, watercolors, and other decorative art materials will spark the creative process. Through the use of inspirational writing prompts, students will express personal insights and feelings as they create original art.

Chinese Stories (G1-G2) Heritage Mandarin (HM) Students only

Learn six famous Chinese Stories, such as Monkeys Fish the Moon, Kitty Goes FishingLittle Horse Crosses the River, and The Tadpoles Look For Their Mommy. Enjoy not only hearing the stories read aloud, but also engaging activities such as designing pictures using foam stickers and seeing videos to bring alive the stories. Clay Studio (G3-G4)

Learn and explore hand-building techniques with earth clay. Experiment making bowls and plates you can use. Clay pieces will be glazed and fired. Get ready for terra-cotta fun!

Coding, Creating, and Rolling Robots (G2-G4)

Using iPad apps, students will design programs to move robotic devices through various challenges. This is not just computer work. Use your creativity to design objects for the robots to push, pull, or maneuver around. Come learn coding through creating and exploring your ideas in the elementary Maker Lab!

Draw & Doodle (G2-G4)

Do you like to be outdoors? Do you like to draw? Here is an opportunity to slow down, sit in nature, and learn how to do observational drawings. We will take time to sketch with the tools of real artists. Not a great artist yet? How do you get better? Practice! Discover and draw the nature which lives all around us!

Fit Kids (G1-G2)

When your body is fit, your brain is fit! Children need to have at least 60 minutes a day of active, aerobic exercise to stay healthy. Each session will have a variety of exercises to build your endurance, muscles, bones, and brain. Exercises will include aerobic activities, whole body strengthening, flexibility, and stretching exercises. Come get fit with your friends and have fun!

Furry Friends and Animal Care (G3-G4)

Do you love animals? Want to learn how to care for different kinds of pets and be a responsible pet owner? Are you curious about careers working with animals? Join knowledgeable high school students in a six-week investigation about animals focusing on a new topic each week. Lessons will include games, video clips, activities, and crafts. Learn more about how to be a compassionate steward of Earth’s creatures.

Can you be as small as a mouse? March like a penguin? Sizzle like a piece of bacon? In this CCA, we’ll use music, movement, facial expression, and emotion to explore how we can become anything or anyone we’d ever want to be. You’re So Dramatic is your chance to get loud and act silly without anyone getting upset or asking you to sit down.
