Elementary School

Teacher Feature

My name is Martha Seibel and I am one of the Elementary Music Teachers. Music was a big part of my family growing up because both of my parents were also music teachers. I play piano and French horn and have performed in many different countries and types of ensembles.

I want music class to be a joyful learning experience for students. I love watching students create and perform music as a team. In class we often play games, move, read books, and sing to help build the foundations of music. By building on these activities, students practice music skills, create their own music, and perform more challenging songs as an ensemble.

A favorite quote of mine comes from the Harry Potter series. Professor Dumbledore says, “It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” No matter our age, we continually develop our talents. Many musicians have struggled, practiced, and developed their skills over time. Likewise, when students don’t succeed the first time, they are encouraged to keep trying. Additionally, the quote speaks to our responsibility to make an impact with the talents we have developed, whether that’s music or something else we are passionate about.

Music allows us to develop interpersonal skills, build confidence, and express ourselves. With these skills and more, I believe Concordia students will positively impact the world.

My name is Ilana Shinkle, and I teach elementary music. I moved to Shanghai from Indianapolis, US where I taught elementary and middle school general music classes. Outside of teaching music, I also enjoy playing percussion and piano.

One reason I enjoy teaching at Concordia is because we focus on educating the whole child. In music class, students often make music together which teaches them to listen to each other and participate in a manner that enhances the ensemble. Students also discover new ways to express themselves through creating and participating in music individually and with others.

My teaching style focuses on having fun while creating great music. In my classes, you will see students actively engaged in music making through singing, moving, playing instruments and games. Through regular participation in making music, students develop the skills and self-confidence integral to being a great musician, successful student, and life-long learner.

I am excited to see how our students continue to grow this year!
