The Grade Four students embarked on an energy adventure back in January, seeking to understand the anchoring phenomenon - the wind turbine.
Throughout their energy unit in science, the students attempted to answer the questions: How is energy related to motion? How is energy transferred? How can energy be used to solve a problem? A series of investigations allowed the students to explore these concepts in depth.
Their unit ended with a wind turbine design challenge. The students worked in pairs to not only design their own wind turbines but actually create a working prototype that could generate enough electricity to power an LED light bulb. This challenged our young engineers in many areas, reaching beyond just science! They learned the importance of creativity, flexibility, perseverance, and patience as well.
