Co-Curricular Program
Elementary School


A wide variety of school organized activities are available for our Elementary School students, from active games and dance to fine arts and crafts! Concordia’s programs not only expand on students’ personal interests, but also allow for news experiences in a supportive and safe environment. Each activity is sponsored and assisted, if needed, by teachers who have an interest or special set of skills that they want to share with the students. Elementary co-curricular activities are held on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday during three sessions.

We also host several clubs on campus that are organized by professional organizations in Shanghai. These programs are pursued outside of school hours, in the evenings and weekends. Past programs include: EVO Tennis, Gymnastics, Ballet, Modern Dance, AKS Basketball, and Little League Baseball.

The Fall 2011 session begins Sept. 5 and ends Oct. 24. Check back soon for details about the Fall 2011 session!

Unless otherwise noted, the following activities will meet on Sept. 5, Sept. 19, Sept. 26, Oct. 10, Oct. 17, and Oct. 24.

Chess Club (G2-G4)

Chess club provides basic instruction and informal games for students. Students will play chess and learn new chess strategies, tactics and rules.

Homework Club (G1-G4)

Students can spend focused time after school to finish homework or receive a little extra help in understanding assignments. Concordia teachers and High School student volunteers will staff these sessions. Homework Club is offered three separate times; each day is considered to be one activity. Please select Homework Club Monday, Homework Club Tuesday, or Homework Club Thursday.

Fun with Puppets (G1-G2)

Fuzzy, Fun Puppets!  Students will play with and make different types of puppets.

Marbles (G1-G2)

Enjoy playing the classic game of marbles—which involves finesse and accuracy. Students can improve skills and develop game strategies.

No-Bake Cooking (G2-G3)

Come learn to make honey joys, chocolate truffles, fruit kebabs with honey cream, beehives, Jell-o surprises and mini pizzas!

Running Club (G3-G4)

Running Club offers students a great chance to exercise outside and improve running skills.

Zumba Kids (Zumbatomic(R) ) is a combination of fun and fitness! Introduce the world of Latin and international thythms to your children. This class combines high energy and motivating music with easy to follow kid-friendly moves, dances and games.

* Concordia offers several activities that are led by external organizations. Please note that each of the following activities has a unique registration process as well as separate fees. In some cases, the clubs meet for a longer session than the regular co-curricular activity schedule, and 4:30 PM bus service is not available.

 

Building with Blocks for Boys (G1-G2)

Attention boys! Come build with all the blocks, Legos, etc. and create your own original creations.

Christmas Beading (G1-G2)

Use beading and art foam craft kits and create ornaments to be hung on the Christmas tree at home.

Rockin’ Rhythm Revelers (RRR) (G3-G4)

RRR is an auditioned, performing band that plays at Christmas and Chinese New Year festivities at Concordia and in the wider community. RRR is a great opportunity for students who know how to play an instrument—piano, guitar, strings, recorder, etc. RRR practices on Tuesday afternoons throughout the school year.

Things to Wear—Part 1 of 2 Sessions (G3-G4)

Weaving is fun! Students will learn basic techniques of weaving to create jewelry and accessories. Please note that this activity requires registration for both Fall and Winter sessions, both on Tuesdays.

Yunnan Education (YEP) Club (G2-G4, and students from G5-G12)

Students of all grade levels can work together to support projects through Concordia’s flagship charity—Yunnan Education Project. Youth empower progress in rural China through education and human-care projects. Concordia students will build friendships with YEP scholarship recipients and enjoy various ways to be involved with YEP efforts. This multi-grade level club fosters interaction with students from other grade levels—providing older students with leadership opportunities and providing younger students with mentors from whom they can also learn leadership skills.

Spirit Choir (G3-G4)

Spirit Choir is made up of 3rd and 4th graders who love to use their voices to make music with other people.  The focus during the fall session is Christmas music.  Students in Spirit Choir must commit to attend all rehearsals through December.  Bus riders may need to make alternate arrangements.  No audition required.

Yearbook and Design Club (G3-G4)

Do you have strong writing skills (in English or Mandarin) or artistic talent? Then you should be interested in helping design the 2011-2012 ES Transform Yearbook AND the first-ever ES Student News Publication! Students will choose one of three topics for the Fall session:

  1. Writing in English: Writing on the various class and school activities; or
  2. Writing in Mandarin: Writing on topics of Teachers Day, Mid Autumn Festival, National Day, Senior Citizens Day, Chinese New Year, Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and Labor Day; or
  3. Cover/ design: 2 weeks designing cover, 2 weeks designing color and page designs, 2 weeks working on titles and other elements

Art Design (G3-G4)

Art Design focuses on open-ended projects that encourage students’ creativity and innovation. Projects this session will focus on jewelry and sculpture making.

Beading (G3-G4)

Do you like beads? Do you have dexterous hands and enjoy fine-detail work? You can make your own beads, as well as create beautiful bracelets and necklaces!

Chess (G2-G4)

Chess enthusiasts can receive basic instruction in an informal setting. Students will play chess and learn new chess strategies, tactics and rules.

Gardening (G1-G2)

Gardening activities connected to soil usage and growing plants will promote a love of nature and strong appreciation of the natural resources available to us.

Monday Homework Club with Mandarin Support (G1-G4)

Students can spend focused time after school to finish homework or receive a little extra help in understanding assignments. Concordia teachers and High School student volunteers will staff these sessions. Homework Club is offered three separate times; each day is considered to be one activity. Please select Homework Club Monday, Homework Club Tuesday, or Homework Club Thursday. A Mandarin teacher who can answer questions in this subject area will assist Monday Homework Club.

WeDo™ Lego® Robotics (G3-G4)

Students work together and use WeDo™ Lego® elements to build and program simple robotic models that utilize a motor, and motions and tilt sensors.

* The Nightingale Musical (G3-G4)

Are you a 3rd or 4th grader who likes to perform? If so, we have a great opportunity for you! The Nightingale is our first Elementary School Musical: it is based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen. We need singers, dancers, actors – people who are interested in putting on a good show!!

• Practices 3:30-5 PM on Monday and Thursday from Feb. 6 – April 26. Special practices week before performance, May 1, 3, with performances May 4 and 5. No bus service available.

• Pick-up an audition packet from Ms. Camp in E122 starting January 3, 2012.

• This activity will run during both Winter and Spring sessions.

Enjoy read-aloud sessions with the teacher and find new favorite books from Concordia’s elementary library!

 

Reader’s Theater (G2-G4)

Reading and acting out folk tales and stories is fun! No memorization is needed, just enthusiasm and creativity!

Try your hand at French knitting! It’s fun to watch the knitted noodle grow by the minute and then make something to wear or play with. French knitting is excellent for improving fine motor skills and sparking creativity.

Intro to Watercolor Painting (G1-G2)

Students can use watercolor paints and a variety of techniques to make a winter scene, a ‘rainbow tree,’ a castle, a cat in a window and more!

Origami (G3-G4)

Change ordinary paper into fantastic animals, bugs, miniature clothes and more! Start at a beginner level and end with 3D origami.

Thursday Homework Club, with Mandarin support (G1-G4)

Students can spend focused time after school to finish homework or receive a little extra help in understanding assignments. Concordia teachers and High School student volunteers will staff these sessions. Homework Club is offered three separate times; each day is considered to be one activity. Film and Production (G3-G4)

3,2,1 Action! Students will be able to act, film and produce original videos. Final product will include a video to submit to the Shanghai Film Festival. This group will also have the opportunity to meet with professor and filmmaker Brian Elliott from Baylor University during lunchtime on Jan. 16, 18, and 19.

Brain Bowl (G3-G4)

Students test their knowledge in academic areas such as geography, literature, math, science, and spelling.  Students work in teams of 4 to compete against other teams. In week 1, students learn how to find information about the weekly topics in order to prepare, at home, for the weekly quiz games.  During week 2-6, students compete in weekly quiz bowls to see who will come out on top as the 2012 Concordia ES Brain Bowl Champions!

Chess enthusiasts can receive basic instruction in an informal setting. Students will play chess and learn new chess strategies, tactics and rules.

Clay Studio (G2-G3)

Student’s will create bowls and/or cups using hand-building techniques of pinching and coil building. Works will be fired and then glazed by students.

Creative Brain Activities (G3-G4)

Feeling brainy?  How about creatively brainy?  Join us for 6 weeks of divergent thinking activities that will help you get “outside the box” in your thinking.  Divergent activities are those that have lots of ways to do things, not just “one right way.”

Chinese Paper Cutting (G3-G4)

Paper Cutting is a famous traditional handicraft in China. In this class, we will use scissors and colored paper to cut out shapes such as stars, animals, flowers, and more! You will be delighted to see the transformation from a plain piece of paper to a work of art. Come and join us!

Chinese Rhymes and Songs Club – (G3-G4)

During the 6 weeks, students will learn 2 popular Chinese children’s rhymes, 2 popular Chinese children’s songs and 1 special Shanghai dialect children’s rhyme. Students will perform them at the final session. Amaze your friends and family with your cultural Chinese knowledge!

Construction Toys – (G1-G2)

Come to the Art Studio to build and make things with the construction toys like buildings, bridges and robots. *The toys have to stay in the studio but your ideas and skills are yours to keep and if you make a super-dooper construction we’ll photograph it to go in your album.

Reader’s Theater (G1-G2)
