Middle School

Each semester Grade 5 and 6 students are required to take an exploratory course in visual arts. They look at specific genres of art and artists from historical periods and develop works and projects designed to represent an expression of that period. Grade 7 and 8 students have the opportunity for further artistic growth and development through elective semester courses. Formal art exhibitions are held at the end of the each semester. Courses are held in the Rittmann Center for the Fine Arts studios, the Clay Studio and the Technology Center.

Art of the Ancient Cultures and the Renaissance

Visual Art 5 is a foundational study that develops each student’s awareness, appreciation and experience with art. Building on ideas and images found in art history, students study Ancient Art and the Renaissance. Each semester, students look at specific periods in art history and briefly study the art and artists of that time. From that study, students develop art works/projects designed to represent an expression of that period.

Art of the 19th and 20th Centuries

Visual Art 6 is a foundational study that develops each student’s awareness, appreciation and experience with art. Building on ideas and images found in art history, students study 19th and 20th century art. Each semester, students look at specific periods in art history and briefly study the art and artists of that time. From that study, students develop art works/projects designed to represent an expression of that period.

Art Appreciation: A Historical and Hands-on Approach to Modern Art

Beginning with Impressionism in the late 1800’s, Art Appreciation class focuses on the study and understanding of modern art through reading, viewing, and discussing great works of. Throughout the historical segment, students will also create and maintain a journal – or book – of their thoughts, ideas, and favorite artists. Students will create their book through hand making paper and creating images from writing, drawing, painting, collage building, and mixed media.

Asian Arts

This art elective highlights the Asian Arts with a fine art study of India and China, two of the world’s oldest civilizations. Artistic creations include a likeness of an Indian manuscript painting, a Chinese brush scroll painting, and a Chinese-style porcelain piece. Student-created presentations featuring Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka complete the semester-long study of Asian Arts.

Clayworks

This combined Grade 7 and Grade 8 visual arts class focuses on the art and craft of functional ware in clay. Students learn to “throw” on the potter’s wheel and develop a variety of hand building techniques. All pieces are glazed or painted. Each project is presented within an historical and cultural context.

Digital Design

This course is an introduction to creating a web site using visual tools. Photo and video editing techniques are also used from MacBook software. However, students are encouraged to use other software to supplement their web designs. Students research various aspects of the web design process to share with the whole class. This is an ever-changing technology, where the students are taught the design aspects to create web sites with various programs available now and in the future. Concordia hosts the websites that are created for as long as the student is enrolled at the school.

Drawing

This combined Grade 7 and Grade 8 visual arts class focuses on abstraction in drawing. Looking at Cubism, Fauvism, and Abstract Expression, each art project is presented within an historical and cultural context, incorporating black and white as well as color drawing media.

Painting

The Painting elective focuses on Expressionism in painting within an historical and cultural context. Considering the many approaches to Expressionism, paintings from this class is created with a variety of painting media.

Print Making

Printmaking class focuses on three forms and techniques of printmaking: serigraphy (screen printing, including photo screen-printing), block printing (linocut), and monoprints (single images). Looking at the printmaking styles of Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, art projects are presented within an historical and cultural context. Students will create formal editions of prints and work in black and white as well as color inks.

Sculpture

This combined Grade 7 and 8 visual art sculpture class focuses on creative and cultural contexts. Considering the many interpretations of 3D works, the class projects are created with a variety of materials, including clay, papier-mâché, wire and mixed media. Sculptural processes include reductive and additive, as well as the styles of abstract and realism.
