Studying the art of theatre is a journey of self discovery. Grade 5 and 6 students are required to take a theatre exploration course, as well as take part in the Grade 5-6 Drama Showcase. For those students who take a further interest in theatre, Grade 7 and 8 students are offered theatre electives and can audition for a part in the annual Grade 7-8 play.
Theatre Exploration
Grade 5 and 6 students explore the basics of acting skills centered upon the principals of body, mind, and voice. Students experience acting through games, role-play and by presenting short scenes and a short play. All students set foot on stage for a performance at the end of the semester.
Grade 7-8 Theatre Elective 1
Students focus on the art of acting and performance. They study monologues, scenes, short plays, stage combat and more!
Grade 7-8 Theatre Elective 2
Student learn the intricacies of the backstage including all things technical. From lights, sound, scenery and stagecraft, to costumes, makeup and design, you name it, they learn how to make the show run!
Grade 5-6 Drama Showcase
At the end of each semester of required theatre coursework, the Grade 5 and 6 students share their performance with the Concordia community in the Rittmann Theatre.
Grade 7-8 Play
This auditioned production usually happens mid-winter in the Rittmann Theatre. Often written by the directors, this play features the amazing talents of our Grade 7-8 students. Rehearsals take place after school. Three to four performances are given. Recent past productions have included, The Play’s the Thing: Brainstorming and 20 Reasons Not to be in a Play, Alice in Wonderland, Fantastic Journeys: Wonderland High and The Phantom Tollbooth.
