Musical foundations learned in Elementary School continue to be bolstered during the Middle School years. At Concordia, students in Grade 5 and 6 are required to take band, choir, or strings. Here, they expand their knowledge of musical notation and rhythmic reading, while learning to create music through improvisation and composition. Students in Grade 7 and 8 are offered band, choir, and strings as elective courses that further develop and focus each student’s music skills.
This beginning band if for those who have never played an instrument. Woodwind, brass and percussion choices are determined prior to the start of school in cooperation with the Band Director. Students perform in 2-3 major concerts per year. Beginning sight-reading, scales and instrumental technique are taught in this class. This beginning choir sings 2-part music of varied styles in three major concerts per school year. Students learn beginning sight-reading, rhythm reading and vocal technique. This is a beginning orchestra is for those who have never played a stringed instrument. Violin, viola and cello choices are determined prior to the start of school in cooperation with the Strings Director. Students perform in 2-3 major concerts per year. Beginning sight-reading, scales and instrumental technique are taught in this class. This ensemble is for students with 1-2 years experience playing a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument. Students perform in three major concerts per year. Sight-reading, scales and instrumental technique are taught in this class. This choir sings 2-part music of varied styles in three major concerts per school year. Students learn sight-reading, rhythm reading and vocal technique. This ensemble is for students with 1-2 years experience playing a stringed instrument. Students perform in three major concerts per year. Sight-reading, scales and instrumental technique are taught in this class. The combined Grade 7 and Grade 8 band is a class oriented toward ensemble and individual performance. It builds on the foundations established in Grade 5 band and Grade 6 band. The class focuses on building intermediate skills through musical performance, scales, rhythm reading, note reading, sight-reading, and musicianship and ensemble techniques, such as intonation, balance and blend. The band performs a variety of styles and genres of music at concerts and special events in the school and community. The 7/8 band is open to students who have completed two years of band instruction (or by audition, if less than two years). This class is offered as a one semester elective, in addition to the student’s other music class. Jazz and pop repertoire is the focus of this ensemble. Wind instruments, as well as guitar, piano and drum set players are welcome. Students are divided by gender to participate in either the 7-8 Girls Choir or the 7-8 Boys Choir. This allows the boys with expanding/changing voices to work together during this exciting time! And it will allow the girls to work on intermediate treble repertoire. Students are taught intermediate sight-reading, rhythm reading, scales and vocal technique. Students are guided through proper vocal technique including breath support and vowel formation. Students are expected to perform in three major concerts throughout the school year. The combined Grade 7 and 8 orchestra builds on the foundations established in Grades 5 and 6 and gives students the opportunity to play in an orchestral ensemble. Students build on technique through rehearsal of scales, bowing exercises, and sight-reading, in addition to playing a varied repertoire. Students are required to participate in three major concerts per year. This class is open to students who have completed at least one year of strings or by audition with the instructor. A non-auditioned choir for any Grade 5-6 student that would like to get more performance time! Ambassador Singers meet before school at 7:00 AM and perform in three major concerts per school year.
