High School

Performance is the name of the game in Concordia’s High School Music program. Our various ensembles allow students tremendous opportunity to perform within a group and fine-tune their musical talents. Our students also have the chance to travel to prominent schools around Asia to perform at auditioned APAC Music Festivals.

Concert Band

Concert Band is open to any student who already plays a wind or percussion instrument, reads music, and wishes to join. This class meets three days out of a four-day cycle. Band members learn scales, sight-reading and simple elements of music theory. Band Members perform varying styles of Band and Wind Literature that includes baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, folk, pop, rock, jazz and multi-cultural repertoire. Members have at least four performance concerts per year in the evenings and sometimes on weekends. Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: No; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: Audition

Wind Ensemble

This advanced, auditioned Wind Ensemble is offered to students who want to continue growing in their musical skill. Members perform in at least four concerts per year. Band members learn advanced scales, sight-reading and elements of music theory. Band Members perform varying styles of Band and Wind Literature that will include baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, folk, pop, rock, jazz and multi-cultural repertoire. This is a performance-based ensemble, where concerts take place in the evening and sometimes on weekends. Auditions take place in May and in August (for newly arriving students). Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: No; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: Audition

Jazz Ensemble

The Jazz Ensemble is offered to students who want to continue growing in their performance of jazz. Instrumentation is limited to those in a standard jazz ensemble: saxophones, trumpets, trombones/baritones, percussion, keyboards and guitars. Members perform at least four concerts per year and learn advanced scales, sight-reading and elements of jazz theory. Band Members perform varying styles of Jazz Literature that will include swing, bebop, big band, blues, Dixieland, funk, pop, rock, gospel, fusion and multi-ethnic repertoire. This is a performance-based ensemble, where concerts take place in the evening and sometimes on weekends. Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: No; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: Audition

Concordia Singers

This choir is open to any student who wishes to join. This class meets 3 days out of a four day cycle. Members perform at least four concerts per year. Choir members learn scales, sight singing, rhythm reading and simple elements of music theory. Singers perform varying styles of choral literature that may include: baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, folk, multi-cultural and popular repertoire. This is a performance-based ensemble, where concerts take place in the evening and sometimes on weekends. Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: No; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: None

Bel Canto

This women’s choir is only open for intermediate+ ability level female singers who pass an audition. Bel Canto is offered to challenge female singers who want to learn advanced repertoire. This graded class consists of experienced singers who are willing to commit their talents for at least four performances per year. Choir members review scales and learn advanced sight singing, advanced rhythm reading and elements of music theory. Singers perform varying styles of choral literature that may include baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, folk, multi-cultural, musical theatre and pop repertoire. This is a performance-based ensemble, where concerts take place in the evening and sometimes on weekends. Auditions will take place in May and in August (for newly arriving students). Concert Strings is open to any student who already plays a stringed instrument, reads music, and wishes to join. This class meets three days out of a four-day cycle. String members will perform varying styles of orchestral literature that will include baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, folk, pop, rock, jazz and multi-cultural repertoire. Chamber Strings

Chamber Strings is for advanced string musicians seeking to further develop their technique and musicianship through technical training, ensemble playing, inquiry of performance styles and historical background, and understanding of advanced theory to enhance overall interpretation of repertoire. This is a performance-based ensemble, where concerts take place in the evening and sometimes on weekends. Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: No; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: Audition

Chamber Singers

This choir is open for advanced singers who must pass an audition in order to join. Chamber Singers will meet three days out of a 4-day cycle and members sing in four to six major concerts per year. Choir members review scales and learn advanced sight singing, advanced rhythm reading and elements of music theory. Singers perform varying styles of choral literature that may include baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, folk, multi-cultural and popular repertoire. This is a performance- based ensemble, where concerts take place in the evening and sometimes on weekends. Choir members are required to take part in the APAC Choral Festival that is held each year. Auditions for this choir will take place in May and in August (for newly arriving students). Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: No; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: Audition

Honors Music Theory

Honors Music Theory is for highly motivated music students who wish to strengthen their music skills through the analytical study of theory. Course curriculum includes the development of aural, sight- reading, written, compositional, and analytical music skills. First semester builds a foundation of fundamental music theory concepts, while second semester develops into melodic and harmonic dictation, composition, and repertoire analysis. As the development of aural skills is a main objective, throughout the course, the students listen to numerous musical works, developing their “musical memory,” and their ability to understand music form, harmonic structure, style, and the aesthetic qualities of music. Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: No; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: a minimum of three years of music skills in voice or musical instrument, or by permission of instructor

AP Music Theory

AP Music Theory is for highly motivated music students who wish to continue to strengthen their music skills through the analytical study of theory. Course curriculum continues the development of aural, sight- reading, written, compositional, and analytical music skills. Tri-M Music Honor Society

An honor society for select music students. Each year, Tri-M students produce and coordinate an auditioned high school talent show called the Concordia Cabaret.

Pep Band

Members of our Concert and Jazz bands combine to play at home basketball games through out the game season. They also perform at school pep assemblies.

Annual Musical-Pit Orchestra

Members of our high school band and orchestra combine to play in the pit orchestra for our annual musical. This is an auditioned ensemble.

Phoenix Strings

This auditioned string quartet performs at functions within the greater Shanghai area, as well as school functions and concerts.

Men’s Choir

The Men’s Choir meets before school; participants perform in two concerts per school year.

Women’s Choir

The Women’s Choir meets before school; participants perform in two concerts per school year.

APAC Band

Each year 16 members of our high school band program pass an audition to attend a band festival within the Southeast Asia region. By combining band members from 6 Asian schools, this large festival, often conducted by a renown university professor, is a wonderful learning experience for our musicians.
