The last month of school is always and exciting and emotional time of the year. Many special events, “last of” happenings and a time when many families are planning their upcoming move. Listed below are several Middle School happenings that will help you plan your time and choose which events you can attend. Approach each one as a celebration. We are blessed with so many wonderful things that they can become a burden if we let them overwhelm us. Try not to let that happen and enjoy all of the things you choose to attend!

» ACAMIS Math Tournament

On Saturday, May 12, starting at 9:30 am in the Phoenix Commons, Concordia Middle School will host 10 teams from 5 area schools in a math competition sponsored by the Association of Chinese and Mongolian International Schools (ACAMIS). Under the direction of Peggy Shuster our Concordia teams will match wits with the other competitors in solving individual and team math problems. Each team of 6, made up of 2 students from grades 6, 7 and 8 will be in action until 2:30 pm. Observers are welcome.

» Mother’s Day Fitness

Saturday, May 12th, 10am-11am, Rittmann Center. Come and join a fun morning of song & dance with a Mother’s Day Mom/Daughter Fitness Class. Moms, bond with your daughter through fun & energetic Aerobic and Yogilates activities.  Daughters, show your appreciation for your moms, and spend quality time together!  This event is suitable for women of all ages and fitness levels. Hosted by Miss Fitzgerald, MS Physical Education. It’s FREE!  Please RSVP to laura.fitzgerald@concordiashanghai.org

» Concordia Idol

5/6 Concordia Idol is on Saturday, May 12, beginning at 6:30 pm in the Rittmann Theater. Individuals and groups have been busy preparing for the big event! The Idol performance is free and all in the Concordia Community are welcome! After Idol the Student Government is sponsoring a free social in the Phoenix Cafe for grades 5 and 6 only. A permission slip is required for the social, pick up one in front of the MS Office.       7/8 Concordia Idol is on Saturday, May 26, beginning at 6:00 pm in the Rittmann Theatre. The earlier start is required to accommodate a record number of entries! The Idol event is free and open to all. After Idol the Student Government will host a social for grade 7 and 8 on the Rittmann Rooftop. The social is 20 RMB and students may purchase a ticket/permission slip at the MS Office beginning May 15.

» Activities for Departing Students and Families

Farewells are often bitter/sweet for many of our leaving families.  There are many aspects of leaving Shanghai that bring us sorrow, while many new adventures ahead, for our families ,which bring us joy.
April 24th was our goodbye talk for families leaving this summer of 2012.  Parents were taught how to use the RAFT method for themselves and for their family members.
May 11 will be the goodbye talk for Grades 5,6,8.
May 16th will be for Grade 7.
The RAFT method can be found online in the Global Nomad literature or in the Third Culture Kid research.  It is a simple method that helps children bring closure to the relationships  and their  time spent in China.
Please ask your children about the discussion time which will occur on the above dates.  If we as a counseling team can serve you in any way before your departure, don’t hesitate to contact us.

» Middle School Art

The Middle School Art Awards and the opening of the Middle School Art Exhibition will take place in the Rittmann Theatre on Monday, May 14th from 3:30 – 4:00 pm. Winners of special recognition in several genre will be announced and a reception will follow. The MS Art Exhibition will be set up in the Middle School from May 14 through May 25.

» Laptop Orders

Students who will be in Grade 7 next year need to order a laptop. The deadline is the last day of school; laptops will be available for pickup during Aug orientation. Replacement computers for August delivery can also be ordered at this time. Orders can be placed at the Tech Hub, second floor of the Phoenix Commons.

» First Lego League

Our MS robotics group sent two teams to Hangzhou International School under the direction of Craig Gingerich, Bryan Klingberg and Peter Tong and came away with a first place, a sixth place and a lot of great memories of our first ever FIRST Lego League event. It was a great learning experience and establishes a good foundation for the robotics activities that we hope to expand next year!

» A Summer Camp Opporuntity

Insight Adventures, one of our trusted class trip and interim vendors, offers a wide rage of outdoor adventure opportunities for students. The trips organized from their base in Yangshou. To find out more contact them - summercamp@insight-adventures.com
