Foreign Language

We believe in educating students in language and communication to provide a platform for success in our global society. For many students, Middle School often provides a new opportunity to learn a language or continue to master a second (or third!) one.

With Concordia’s small language class sizes and dedicated faculty, we are able to tailor language instruction to students with a variety of backgrounds and abilities. Mandarin study is required through Grade 7. In Grade 8, students have the option of continuing in Mandarin or choosing to learn either Spanish or French. Our foreign language faculty work to emphasize the connection between language and culture as well. From visiting experts to local class trips, Concordia students are fully engaged in foreign language.

Placement in Learning Levels

Students are interviewed upon arrival and tentatively placed. Anecdotal evidence is collected during the first two weeks of class and adjustments are made when necessary. Students who have attended Concordia previously are placed in the appropriate level based on a combination of class performance, teacher recommendation and achievement on the end of the year assessment.

A Two-Track Program

The Mandarin Program is divided into two tracks – Mandarin as a Foreign Language track for non-native Mandarin speakers and the Heritage Mandarin track for students who speak Mandarin at home.
