Mandarin as a Foreign Language

Mandarin as a Foreign Language (MFL) is offered to students with no or limited formal Mandarin learning. Students are assessed and placed in the most appropriate learning level. These classes focus on listening, speaking and recognizing Chinese characters, reading and writing simple sentences, and developing an awareness and understanding of Chinese culture.

MFL1 for Grades 5 and 6 – 40 minutes daily

No prior or limited experience in a Mandarin program required. The class focuses on learning words/phrases, recognizing Chinese characters, Pinyin system, and some character strokes. Students study by themes – Greetings, Numbers, Family Members, Self Introduction, Occupations, Time, Transportation, Colors, Clothing, and Parts of the Body.

  • MLF1 – main textbook – Easy Steps to Chinese – Book 1

MFL2 for Grades 5 and 6 – 40 minutes daily

Prior experience in a Mandarin program required. The class focuses on the continued learning of words/phrases, recognizing Chinese characters, Pinyin system, and some character strokes. Students study by themes – Countries, Languages, Phone Etiquette, Weather, Seasons, Sickness, Hobbies, Vegetables and Fruits, Meals and Dining Out, Lessons relating to the House, Furniture, and Neighborhoods.

  • MFL2 – main textbook – Easy Steps to Chinese – Book 2

MFL3 for Grades 5 and 6 – 40 minutes daily

Prior experience in a Mandarin program required. The class focuses on continued learning of words/phrases, recognizing Chinese characters, Pinyin system, and some character strokes. Students study by themes – Relatives, Appearance, Seeing a Doctor, Seasons, Occupations, Hobbies, Subjects of Study, School Facilities, Stationery, Fresh Market, Snacks, Eating Out, Neighborhood, Asking the Way, and Neighbors.

  • MFL3 – main textbook – Easy Steps to Chinese – Book 3

UPPER – MFL1 for Grades 7 and 8 – 55/60 Minutes

No prior or limited experience in a Mandarin program required. This class focuses on learning words/phrases, recognizing Chinese characters, Pinyin system,and some character strokes. Students study by themes  – Greetings, Numbers, Family Members, Occupations, School, Transportation, Time, and Events in a Day.

  • UPPER – MFL1 – main textbook – Chinese Made Easy – Book 1

UPPER – MFL2 for Grades 7 and 8 – 55/60 Minutes

Prior experience in a Mandarin program required. This class focuses on the continued learning of words/phrases, recognizing Chinese characters, Pinyin system, and some character strokes. Students study by themes – Colors, Clothing, Weather, Seasons, Holidays, Hobbies, and Lessons relating to school day.

  • UPPER MFL2 – main textbook – Chinese Made Easy – Book 2

UPPER – MFL3 for Grades 7 and 8 – 55/60 Minutes

Prior experience in a Mandarin program required. This class focuses on the continued learning of words/phrases, recognizing Chinese characters, Pinyin system, and some character strokes. Students study by themes – Lessons relating to School Facilities, The Body/Appearance, Health and Wellness, Money and Shopping, Foods, and the Living Environment.

  • UPPER MFL3 – main textbook – Chinese Made Easy – Book 3
