Foreign Language

We believe all students benefit from learning a second language. In fact, we feel so strongly about this that we require all graduating students to successfully complete three credits of either Mandarin, French or Spanish. Learning a foreign language demands flexibility in thinking and fosters an ability to think cross-culturally. These skills are in high demand, especially in the world beyond Concordia.

French is a modern language that is spoken in countries all around the world. We offer a full curriculum of French, including Advanced Placement for those students who begin studying in Grade 8. All of our French teachers are native speakers.

China is one of the fastest-developing countries and rising in prominence everyday. As a result, Mandarin is quickly becoming, the world over, one of the most desirable of second languages to master. Our students have endless opportunities both in and out of school to hone those skills. We respect and celebrate diversity at the school but, considering China as a temporary home, also consider an ability to communicate in the Chinese language as a practical tool for life beyond Concordia.

Mandarin as a Foreign Language 1-4

Mandarin as a Foreign Language (MFL) targets those students with little to no background in the Chinese language. This course lays a foundation across three major communicative modes (interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational) and through basic thematic topics. Listening, Speaking, Recognizing Chinese Characters, Reading, and Writing (via laptop) skills are fostered. Basic Chinese culture is introduced accordingly. Duration: 2 Semesters; Required: See graduation requirements; Credit: 1.0; Prerequisite: Each course must be completed in succession or permission of Director

Heritage Mandarin 1-8

Heritage Mandarin is designed to serve those students who have successfully completed MFL 4 or for those students with a background in spoken Mandarin but requiring additional work on literacy skills. Both spoken and written Mandarin are emphasized. The goal is to provide students with ongoing and varied opportunities to further develop their proficiencies (in terms of communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities) within the Chinese language. Practical writing assignments such as developing advertisements, short reports, etc are introduced. Students are assessed for correct placement.

Advanced levels of Heritage Mandarin emphasize both speech and writing. Contemporary and Historical Chinese culture is explored, providing an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of Chinese culture.
